The Autonomous District Nenets ( Russian Ненецкий автономный округ / Nenezki awtonomny okrug ; Nenets Ненёцие автономной ӈокрук / Nenjozije awtonomnoi njokruk ) is an Autonomous District with the capital Naryan-Mar in Northwest Russia . It is part of Arkhangelsk Oblast .

geography

The autonomous district is located in the extreme northeast of the Eastern European Plain on the Barents Sea . In the west it is bounded by the Timan Ridge , in the east by the Urals . In the south lies the Komi Republic . The Kanin peninsula and the islands of Kolgujew and Waigach also belong to the district . The most important river is the Pechora . To the north of the Kara Sea is the double island of Nowaya Zemlya , which does not belong to the district.

history

The area has been settled since the Stone Age, and there have been trade relations between the Nenets and Russians for centuries. The Autonomous Okrug was created in 1929 and today's capital Narjan-Mar was founded in 1936 .

population

The Nenets belong to the Samoyed language group . The former nomadic people were forcibly sedentary during the Soviet era .

However, Nenets make up only 18% of the population in the autonomous district named after them; 63% are Russians and 9% are Komi (2010 census), about a tenth Ukrainians, Belarusians, Tatars and others. Smaller minorities were Udmurts (1959 308; 2002 95 people) and Russian Germans (1959 224; 2002 25 people). The district is extremely sparsely populated, and more than half of the around 40,000 inhabitants live in the capital Narjan-Mar . The official languages are Russian and Nenzisch .

economy

Polar climate and permafrost hinder agriculture . For centuries, reindeer herding , fishing, and fur hunting were the main industries. With the discovery of oil deposits , oil production was added. To the north of the district, the Priraslomnaja oil field is being developed offshore in the Barents Sea, with reserves of around 73 million tons.

politics

On May 23, 2006, the then incumbent governor of the Autonomous Okrug, Alexei Barinov, was arrested in Arkhangelsk on suspicion of fraud and infidelity and later sentenced to three years' imprisonment, which was suspended.

Governor since February 24, 2009 was Igor Fyodorov . On February 22, 2014, he was replaced by Igor Koschin .

Administrative division

Since the "municipal administrative reform" in Russia, which was implemented in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug in 2005, the Autonomous Okrug has been divided into the capital Naryan-Mar and the Sapoljarny rajon (literally Transpolar Rajon ), which covers the entire territory of the district except that of the capital with all other localities.

The Sapoljarny rajon includes the urban-type settlement Iskatelei (previously under the administration of Naryan-Mar, but independent since the administrative reform), the independent rural (previously urban) settlement Amderma and 17 village soviets , which together comprise 42 localities.
