The Ryazan Oblast ( Russian Рязанская область / Rjasanskaja oblast ) is an oblast in the Central Russia region, southeast of Moscow .
geography
The oblast lies in the Eastern European Plain , more precisely in the Oka-Don Plain . The main river is the Oka , which flows through the oblast from west to east and divides the territory into two parts: a forested northern part and a southern part, which includes the deciduous forest zones and the forest steppe . The climate is temperate continental . The average temperature in January is -10 ° C, in July +20 ° C.
history
The history of the Principality of Ryazan goes back to the 10th century. Its location on the edge of the area populated by Russians has repeatedly led to wars, for example the Mongol storm of 1237 . The principality was able to assert itself against Moscow for a long time and only finally came under its sovereignty in 1521 .
economy
With the exception of the capital, the region is more agricultural. Mineral resources in the region are limestone , marl and clay . The deposits of limestone, glass and quartz sand are also of great importance . There are also occurrences of phosphorites , gypsum rock, brown iron stone , coal , mineral paint and peat . The main branches of industry in Ryazan are the processing of petroleum products, metal processing, communications electronics, the construction and food industries.
population
The last Russian censuses in 2002 and 2010 showed a population of 1,227,910 and 1,154,114 residents, respectively. The number of inhabitants thus fell by 73,796 people (−6.01%) in these eight years. In 2010 818,349 people lived in cities. This corresponds to 70.91% of the population (in Russia 73%). By January 1, 2014, the population continued to drop to 1,140,844 people. The area's population is almost entirely Russian. The Ukrainians are the most important ethnic minority in Ryazan Oblast. Their number - like the number of Mordvines, Belarusians, Russian Germans and Jews - is falling sharply, however. By contrast, thousands of people have immigrated from the Transcaucasus, Anatolia and Central Asia since the end of the Soviet Union. In addition to the nationalities listed above, there are also many Tajiks (1989: 252; 2010: 1,612 people), Georgians (1989: 368; 2010: 630), Turks (1989: 7; 2010: 478) and Yazidis (1989: none; 2010: 265 ).
Administrative division and largest cities
Ryazan Oblast is divided into 25 Rajons and 4 urban districts . The administrative center of the oblast, Ryazan , is the only major city in the oblast. Kassimow , Skopin and Sassowo , which form the other three urban districts next to Ryazan, follow at a large distance in terms of population . There are a total of 12 cities and 21 urban-type settlements in the oblast .
