Novomitschurinsk ( Russian Новомичуринск ) is a city in Ryazan Oblast ( Russia ) with 19,309 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the north of the Oka-Don plain about 85 km south of the oblast capital Ryazan on the right bank of the Pronja , a right tributary of the Oka, which flows into the Volga, which is dammed up here to form a dam .
Novomichurinsk is located in Pronsk Raion .
history
Novomitschurinsk was established in 1968 as a workers' settlement in connection with the construction of the Ryazan thermal power station and received city rights in 1981.
The place was named after the botanist Ivan Michurin (1885-1935), who was born on the nearby former country estate of Vershina , now the village of Michurowka , and who began his plant breeding activities. The prefix Novo- (Russian for new- ) is used to distinguish it from the town of Michurinsk (previously Koslow ) , which is located in the Tambov Oblast and has also been named after Michurin since 1932 .

Economy and Infrastructure
In Novomichurinsk there is the Ryazan thermal power plant ( Ryazanskaya GRES ) with an installed capacity of 2650 megawatts and the natural gas power plant GRES-24, which was built in 1990, with an output of 310 megawatts. Both power plants belong to OGK-6 , a group that has been independent of the previous Unified Energy System holding since June 1, 2008 as part of the reorganization of the Russian energy industry .
There are also companies in the light and food industry as well as the construction industry.
The city is located on the Birkino - Woslebowo railway line (industrial line; freight traffic only). In Birkino, 20 kilometers to the east, there is also the closest passenger station on the Moscow – Ryazan – Ryashsk – Voronezh route (route km 277).
