geography

The city is located about 200 km southeast of the Oblast capital Ryazan on the Shacha , a left tributary of the Zna in the river system of the Volga .

Shazk is the administrative center of the Shazki Rajon named after him .

history

The place was built in 1553 as a fortified military post on the then southeastern border of the Russian state and was part of the defense line named after the river and place ( Schazkaja sasseka ). Initially the place was called Shazki Gorodok ( Shacha town after the river; name of Finno-Ugric origin).

In 1774 the inhabitants of the village rose up on the side of the peasants during the Pugachev uprising .

In 1779 the city charter was awarded as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the Tambov governorate .

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the city was an important trading center for hemp fabrics, but subsequently lost its economic importance, as a result of which the population halved in the course of the 20th century.

In 1923 Shazk came to the Ryazan Governorate , from which the Oblast later emerged.
