The Tambov Governorate ( Russian Тамбовская губерния , Tambovskaya gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire , located in the south-eastern center of European Russia. It bordered (clockwise from the north) with the following governorates : Vladimir , Nizhny Novgorod , Penza , Saratov , Voronezh , Oryol , Tula and Ryazan .

It had an area of ​​66,588 km², the capital was Tambov .

It was founded in 1779 as a governor and converted into a governorate in 1796. In 1920/21 it was a center of the Tambov uprising , during which the central government had no control over large parts of the area for a few months. In 1928 it was divided into several districts of the Central Black Earth Oblast .

According to the results of the 1897 census, the governorate had 2,684,030 inhabitants. Of these, 2,562,677 were Russians, 89,704 Mordvins and 16,976 Tatars. There were also smaller groups of Ukrainians, Belarusians, Jews and Germans.

The harvest in 1903 resulted in: 36,293 tons of wheat, 1,302,914 tons of rye, 502,807 tons of oats, 14,350 tons of peas, 4658 tons of buckwheat and 641,371 tons of potatoes. Hemp, sugar beets (1903: 82,232 tons) and tobacco (1903: 9.1 million kg) were also grown. In 1903 the cattle population was: 538,000 horned cattle, 1,595,000 coarse and 160,000 fine-wool sheep and 280,000 pigs. Horse breeding was important and famous, it produced excellent trotters. In 1900 there were 226 studs with 6742 breeding animals. In total there were 605,000 horses in the governorate. The value of industrial production in 1900 was 20.4 million rubles in 635 factories with 16,274 workers. The main industries were the distillery (6.5 million), the sugar production (2.4 million), the tobacco processing (1.6 million) and the cloth making. The grain and cattle trade was very important.
