Stephan Breith (* 1950 in Cologne ) is a German cellist .

Stephan Breith is the son of the violinist and long-time concert master of the Hr-Sinfonieorchester Alfred Breith. He studied with Alexander Molzahn , Leo Koscielny , Siegfried Palm and Enrico Mainardi and passed his artistic school leaving examination and the concert exam in Cologne. From 1977 to 2015 he was first solo cellist of the Hessian State Orchestra Wiesbaden and was appointed concertmaster in 1992. From 1997 to 2015 he was also a member of the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival .

Breith gave world premieres of works by the composers Hans Zender , Mauricio Kagel , Wilfried Maria Danner , Paul-Heinz Dittrich , Theo Brandmüller , Volker David Kirchner , Bertold Hummel , Robert HP Platz , Jörn Arnecke , Milko Kelemen , Wolfgang Köhler , Winfried Toll , Pierre Even , Isidora Radita , Pèter Köszeghy and others.

As a member of the French Ensemble Instrumental Andrée Colson , Breith undertook concert tours through Southeast Asia, Australia, Africa and Europe. In addition to appearances with various chamber music ensembles, he also often worked with choreographers and dancers and performed with rock bands ( rock around baroque ) and with organ, harp, guitar and bandono accompaniment. Since 1995 he has formed the trio The Cologne Connection with Carin Levine (flute) and Kristi Becker , with whom he also played numerous world premieres and radio productions. After 2000 he initiated several concert series including Rendezvous at 11am in the Museum Wiesbaden (from 2003) and Musik-Wort-Painting + Wein in Herxheim (from 2004). Since 2007 he has played in the quartet of Gabriel Vallejo (with Helena Rüegg and Winfried Holzenkamp ), with whom he a. a. recorded the album Un nuevo comenzo .

Breith, he also works as a lecturer at the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra , the Hessian State Youth Orchestra , the Academy for Music in Darmstadt and the Taiwan Youth Orchestra .
