from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Volker David Kirchner (born June 25, 1942 in Mainz ; † February 4, 2020 in Wiesbaden ) was a German composer .

Life

Kirchner came from a family of musicians. After studying (1956 to 1959) with Günter Kehr ( violin ) and Günter Raphael ( composition ) at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz , Kirchner attended the Cologne University of Music from 1959 to 1963 , where Bernd Alois Zimmermann was one of his formative teachers . He expanded his training at the Detmold University of Music with Tibor Varga .

He had his first employment from 1962 to 1964 as principal violist with the Rheinisches Kammerorchester Köln, which was followed by an engagement with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt (1966–1986). He played the string quartet with Ulf Hoelscher, among others . Concert tours with the Kehr Trio have taken him to South America, North Africa and the Middle East. These tours stimulated him to become intensively involved with non-European music. In 1970 he co-founded the Ensemble 70 in Wiesbaden and worked with the director and painter Marian Czura on his first major stage work, Riten .

From 1972 Kirchner worked as a composer for incidental music at the Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden; Since 1986 Volker David Kirchner has been a freelance composer; his work included all genres and is played worldwide. In addition to a huge body of chamber music with different ensembles, it included over 20 large orchestral works, 10 solo concerts, numerous works of secular and sacred vocal music as well as 13 stage works.

With his Belshazar , Kirchner was the opening composer of the Festival Opera of the 20th Century at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 1985 . In 1990 the West German music festival Musikkultur heute opened in Moscow with the world premiere of Kirchner's Requiem in the Tchaikovsky Hall with the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg and the State Academic Choir Riga under the direction of Gerd Albrecht . His opera Gilgamesh , a work commissioned by the Lower Saxony State Opera in Hanover on the occasion of EXPO 2000, premiered in May 2000 as the opening piece of EXPO 2000. At the invitation of Walter Fink , he was the third composer in the annual composer portrait of the Rheingau Music Festival in 1992 . Volker David Kirchner's opera Savonarola premiered in Kiel in 2011 and his Gutenberg opera in Erfurt in 2016.
