The Ensemble Villa Musica is an international chamber music ensemble that works closely with the Villa Musica Foundation .

history

The ensemble was founded in 1990 when some soloists met in Mainz at the Villa Musica Foundation for master classes. They decided to found a chamber music ensemble with no repertoire restrictions, with a focus on rarely performed masterpieces. All ensemble members were or are first soloists in large German orchestras and have been teaching as professors at German music academies for years . Since its inception, the ensemble has had more than 20 renowned instrumentalists as members, most of whom are still active today. The clarinetist Ulf Rodenhäuser has been in charge of the ensemble since it was founded . Well-known ensemble members include the violinist Rainer Kussmaul (former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic and founder of the Berlin Baroque Soloists), the violinist Thomas Brandis (former member of the Berlin Philharmonic and founder of the Brandis Quartet), and the violist Enrique Santiago (former principal violist in the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra , in the symphony orchestra of the Südwestfunk Baden-Baden and in the radio symphony orchestra Stuttgart as well as soloist of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields ), the cellist Martin Ostertag (former solo cellist of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra , the Amati Ensemble Berlin and the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin ), the Oboist Ingo Goritzki and bassoonist Klaus Thunemann (former solo bassoonist with the Münster Symphony Orchestra and the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg ).

All instruments of a symphony orchestra, including the piano, are represented in the ensemble in variable formations from solo to solo chamber orchestra . The repertoire of the ensemble includes works by classical composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Franz Schubert , Gabriel Fauré , Camille Saint-Saëns , Paul Hindemith and Bohuslav Martinů , but also works by contemporary composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki and Hans Werner Henze .

The ensemble has made a name for itself over the years by training highly talented young chamber musicians and performing and recording forgotten chamber music masterpieces, and performs regularly in “Villa Musica” programs as well as in concert halls and music festivals around the world. They also present their repertoire in a series of the Musikalische Akademie concerts in Stuttgart.

The Ensemble Villa Musica is managed by the Berlin concert agency "3 Klang".

Cooperation with the Villa Musica Foundation

The Villa Musica Foundation - a foundation of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and Südwestrundfunk - was not only the inspiration for the name of the ensemble. The ensemble or the members of the ensemble play at the concerts organized by Villa Musica and work closely with highly talented young scholars from the foundation. As part of the “Course and Concert” series of events, the ensemble members perform together with the fellows from the Villa Musica Foundation.

Recordings

The ensemble recorded for the music label Naxos and music production Dabringhaus & Grimm (MDG). The first recordings in 1992 included the publication of Franz Schubert's Trout Quintet and Piano Trio No. 2 in E flat major at Naxos. In cooperation with the music label MDG, the ensemble has now published an extensive CD series, including French chamber music by Gabriel Fauré, Camille Saint-Saëns and Darius Milhaud , Czech chamber music by Leoš Janáček , Gideon Klein and Erwin Schulhoff , and late romantic German chamber music by Louis Spohr and Carl Reinecke and the chamber music works of Paul Hindemith. Some of the recordings received international awards.
