Radovan Vlatković

Radovan Vlatković (born January 29, 1962 in Zagreb , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian horn player .

Vlatković received his first horn lessons at the age of six during a two-year stay in the United States. As a young man he first studied at the Music Academy in Zagreb, then at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold with Michael Höltzel .

From 1982 to 1990 he was first horn player in the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (now the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin ). He left the orchestra to devote himself to his work as a soloist. His repertoire includes all horn music from the baroque to the present day. He has since performed as a soloist on all continents. He has played with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , Munich Chamber Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra London, English Chamber Orchestra , Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Academy of St Martin in the Fields , London Symphony Orchestra , Camerata Academica and the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg, in Japan with the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra , the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra , the NHK Symphony Orchestra and in Australia with the orchestras in Melbourne and Adelaide. His commitment to chamber music is pronounced; he plays with András Schiff , Heinz Holliger , Klaus Thunemann and Elmar Schmid as permanent chamber music partners. He has performed at many festivals such as Gidon Kremer 's Lockenhaus, Rudolf Serkin 's Marlboro, András Schiff's Mondsee, Ittingen and Vicenza as well as Kuhmo, Prades and Prussia Cove. He often played with the Cherubini and Endellion Quartet as well as the singer Peter Schreier . Radovan Vlatković has made many recordings of works for his instrument: Mozart and Strauss concerts with the English Chamber Orchestra under Jeffrey Tate , works by Saint-Saëns with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris under Jean-Jacques Kantorow, the serenade for tenor, horn and strings with Neil Jenkins and the Oriol Ensemble Berlin, double concerts by Leopold Mozart and Fasch with Herrmann Baumann and the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields under Iona Brown.

Several times he received the German Music Critics' Prize. He is particularly interested in contemporary music. Various works were written especially for him. He played world premieres by Elliott Carter , Heinz Holliger, Krzysztof Penderecki and various Croatian composers.

As a teacher, he regularly held master classes in many countries, including at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg , the Scuola di Musica in Fiesole, the Academica Chigiana in Siena, the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano and the Royal Academy of Music in London. From 1992 to 1998 he was a professor at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart and was then appointed full professor for horn at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He is also the professor of the “Cátedra Canon” at the Escuela Superior Reina Sofia in Madrid and has been teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2006 .

From 2000 to 2003 he was Artistic Director of the International Chamber Music Festival “Music September” in Maribor, Slovenia.

Radovan Vlatković has six children and lives with his family in the Salzburg area.

Recordings

Vlatković recorded all horn concertos by WA Mozart and Richard Strauss for EMI Classics with the English Chamber Orchestra under Jeffrey Tate. The recording of the Mozart Horn Concerts was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize.
