Sir András Schiff [ ˈɒndraːʃ ʃif ] (born December 21, 1953 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian pianist , conductor and music teacher who also has Austrian and British citizenship.

Life

András Schiff, contemporary of Zoltán Kocsis and Dezső Ránki , is the son of a gynecologist and grew up as an only child in a musically interested family. Schiff started playing the piano at the age of five. He first learned from Elisabeth Vadász and at the age of 14 began his studies at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, with Ferenc Rados , Pál Kadosa and György Kurtág , among others . He spent several summer holidays in England with relatives. There he made friends with the conductor and harpsichordist George Malcolm , who was around 40 years his senior , with whom he played and who awakened an understanding of Bach's music in him . Schiff received Austrian citizenship in 1987 and British citizenship in 2001 . In 2014 he was ennobled and raised to the English knighthood (" Knight Bachelor " with the predicate "Sir").

Schiff performs internationally, both as a soloist and with well-known orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic . Schiff has been the founder and conductor of the internationally performing chamber orchestra Cappella Andrea Barca since 1999 .

From 1989 to 1998 Schiff directed the Mondsee Festival near Salzburg . Together with Heinz Holliger , he founded the "Ittinger Whitsun Concerts" in 1995 in the Ittingen Charterhouse .

In 2000 Schiff canceled his participation in the Schubertiade in Feldkirch , thus expressing his protest against the participation of the right-wing FPÖ in the Austrian federal government . In January 2011, Schiff and several artists drafted a resolution against the Hungarian media law and the interference of politics in culture under the Orbán government. In interviews he announced that he would no longer give concerts in Hungary because he was persona non grata there and he was personally threatened by anti-Semitic agitation. He was "very angry" with Hungary and angry about the behavior of the Jewish community in Hungary, which did not take a public position against these developments.

Schiff is married to the violinist Yuuko Shiokawa. He has residences in London and Florence . In addition to his native Hungarian, Schiff speaks German and English on a practically native level.
