Since the composer Franz Schubert's (1797–1828) lifetime, performances of his works have been referred to as the Schubertiade . Initially, the term was used for performances in a private setting, today it also refers to concert series and music festivals.

Schubertiads during the composer's lifetime

From 1815–1824, highly acclaimed house concerts were held in the Sonnleithner family's large apartment in Gundelhof (at Bauernmarkt 2-4) in Vienna . Ignaz Sonnleithner had gathered a group of culturally interested citizens around him and soon came into contact with Schubert. Sonnleithner's house concerts offered Schubert a good opportunity to make his works known in Vienna.

The first documentary event, which can be called the Schubertiade in the narrower sense , took place on January 26, 1821 in the von Schober family's apartment (as evidenced by a letter from Joseph Huber of January 30, 1821 to his bride Rosalie Kranzbichler). From 1822 Schubert himself used the term. A Schubertiade can also be organized alone, as is shown in Leopold Kupelwieser's letter to Schober of March 8, 1824 ("I sometimes give myself Schubertiads too").

Franz Schubert played the piano at the first Schubertiads, and the baritones Johann Michael Vogl or later Carl von Schönstein sang his songs. Readings and witty entertainment games, which often had a specific theme, were also part of the evenings. These were a mixture of friendly meetings and a literary-musical salon .

Frequent guests were Joseph Sonnleithner , Leopold von Sonnleithner , Fritz and Franz von Hartmann , Anton von Doblhoff-Dier , Joseph Huber, Johann Baptist Jenger , Jacob Nicolaus Craigher , the painters Moritz von Schwind , Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Wilhelm August Rieder , who Poets Johann Mayrhofer , Johann Gabriel Seidl and the composer and conductor Franz Lachner , as well as Schubert's closest friends Joseph von Spaun , Franz von Schober , Karl Enderes, Joseph Witteczek, Joseph von Gahy and Eduard von Bauernfeld .

The Schubertiaden were hosted by Sonnleithner and others. a. the painter Ludwig Mohn, the von Bruchmann family , the poets Franz von Schlechta , Eduard von Bauernfeld and Schober's uncle Joseph Derffel, administrators of Atzenbrugg Castle . The last major Schubertiade during the composer's lifetime took place on January 28, 1828 at Joseph von Spaun's apartment in the so-called Viennese Klepper stalls (between Teinfaltstrasse and Schreyvogelgasse). Shortly before, in the autumn of 1827 the composer presented "a circle of gruesome songs" - the great song cycle Winterreise  - to Franz Schober (announced by Schubert himself after the memories of Joseph Spaun with the above words). Such and similar occurrences make the Schubertiads also relevant to music history.

Schubertiaden today

Since the 20th century, larger music festivals, which deal mainly with Schubert's work, have been named "Schubertiade", including in particular the Schubertiade founded by Hermann Prey and Gerd Nachbauer in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg , in the towns of Hohenems and Schwarzenberg .

Other festivals or concert programs that bear the name “Schubertiade” are the “Schubertiade im Ettlinger Schloss ” coined by the pianist Thomas Seyboldt in Ettlingen (near Karlsruhe ), the “Schubertiade Schloss Eyb” in Dörzbach ( Hohenlohe ), the “Schubertiade Luxembourg ", The" Schubertiade d'Espace 2 "in Biel / Bienne and the Schubertiade in Vilabertran (near Barcelona ). The Schubertiaden Schnackenburg take place annually in the town on the Elbe.
