family

Joseph von Spaun came from the originally Swabian Spaun family , whose lineage begins with the farmer and yarn maker Bartholomäus Spaun , documented 1583–1599, in Deisenhausen ( Günzburg district ) and which later became prosperous in Linz (Upper Austria). He was the son of Franz Xaver Ritter von Spaun (1756-1804), imperial councilor and estate syndic in Upper Austria , and the widowed Josepha Steyrer von Riedenburg (1757-1835). His siblings included the historian and folklorist Anton Ritter von Spaun (1790–1849), Franz von Spaun (1792–1829), Marie, married Ottenwalt (1795–1847) and Maximilian Gandolf (1797–1844).

Spaun married Franziska Roner Edle von Ehrenwert on April 14, 1828 in Vienna (* July 17, 1795 in Calliano , Asti Province , South Tyrol ; † January 31, 1890 in Görz ), the daughter of the landowner and Imperial and Royal Captain Joseph Roner Edler von Ehrenwert . The son of this marriage is the later kuk Admiral Hermann Freiherr von Spaun (1833–1919).

On August 25, 1859, with a diploma dated November 2, 1859, Spaun was elevated to the status of Austrian baron in Vienna .

Life

Spaun studied law at the University of Vienna from 1806 to 1809 and then entered the civil service. In 1808 he met Franz Schubert , who was eight years his junior, in Konvikt , and this led to a lifelong friendship. Spaun repeatedly supported Schubert financially. He also made it possible for him to go to the opera and the theater. He also introduced the young Schubert to parts of Viennese society. Spaun also acted as host at the last great Schubertiade during the composer's lifetime on January 28, 1828.

On May 18, 1841 he was made an honorary citizen of Vienna . Joseph von Spaun acquired an estate in Traunkirchen , Upper Austria, on which he stayed annually. Many people in Traunkirchen are familiar with him as a committed swimming instructor.
