history
Traunkirchen is an old settlement area. Finds show that people lived here as early as the early Stone Age, as well as in the Bronze and Hallstatt Ages . A test excavation on the Johannesberg in 1979 gave certain indications that a pagan place of worship was here 3500 years ago.
The Johannesberg chapel bears the inscription "Once the hideout of pagan pirates, now consecrated to (to) St. John the Baptist". This and the image of the founding of the Traunkirchen monastery in today's rectory, which shows a battle and the overthrow of statues of idols in the background, point to conflict-laden times of the past. It should not have been easy for the church here, probably also in connection with the salty upper Traun Valley, which is isolated from Traunstein and Sonnstein .
In a document in 909 AD, King Ludwig passed the "Trunseo" abbey into the possession of the Salzburg Archbishop Pilgrim I and a count Aribo , who had acquired 904 properties in Styria . The Traunkirchen monastery was founded around 1020 and is considered the successor to this abbey.
Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century . Since 1490 it has been assigned to the principality "Austria ob der Enns". During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945, Upper Austria was restored, first as an American zone of occupation, then in 1955 in free and restored Austria.
On September 23, 1963, the "Lion Monument" located on the banks of the Traunkirchen Traunsee was destroyed by a bomb attack and rebuilt the following year. Other targets of the attack on the same day were the saltworks and the Feuerkogel cable car in neighboring Ebensee . The attacks are attributable to Italian extremists in the course of the conflict in South Tyrol at the time.
coat of arms
Blazon : Decreased arched split; above in blue three silver, one to two posed, flying seagulls, of which the second is turned to the left, below in gold a blue arched beam. Community colors: blue-yellow-blue.
The coat of arms symbolizes the location of the place on the Traunsee. It was awarded in 1978 by the Upper Austrian provincial government, but has been used in a similar form (with five seagulls) without official approval since the beginning of the 20th century.
politics
Christoph Schragl (ÖVP) has been mayor since June 25, 2015. In the 2015 municipal council election, the ÖVP was able to gain 48.7% of the vote. The SPÖ Traunkirchen and the newly founded list for Traunkirchen (LiFT) were tied with 285 votes each (25.6%).
Population development
In 1991 the municipality had 1,742 inhabitants according to the census, then 1,745 inhabitants in 2001 and 1,761 in 2004.
Culture and sights
Parish church
According to the original image, the "Trunseo" abbey was built in 632 AD. In 1020 Benedictine nuns from the Erinkloster in Salzburg came to Traunkirchen. The first fire in 1327 completely destroyed the monastery. But it was rebuilt by the Benedictine nuns. After the second fire in 1632, the Jesuits from Passau, who took over the monastery in 1622, created the baroque church in its current form. The Jesuit monastery was closed in 1773 and the monastery church has served as a parish church ever since. The high altar, which was built by Franz Preisl in 1754, is dedicated to the coronation of Mary. The right side altar is dedicated to St. Ignatius , and the left one to St. Consecrated to John of Nepomuk . The main work of the church is the famous fisherman's pulpit, which an unknown master created in 1753 and which represents the miracle of the rich fishing of Peter.

Fisherman's pulpit
The fisherman's pulpit in the current parish church (former monastery church) was carved in 1753 by an unnamed artist. It represents the miracle of rich fishing. The apostles James and John in the boat pull up the net filled with fish. Christ stands in the background and Peter kneels before him.
The sound cover is crowned by the statue of St. Franz Xavier , the Jesuit Mission Apostle for India and Japan. Four brown and black figures, the representatives of the Far East, sit at his feet. In front of the saint is a large crab holding a cross in its scissors. From the life of Franz Xavier it is told that a ship he was on was put in great danger by a storm. To appease the storm he held his cross in the sea, and a wave knocked it out of his hand. After landing, a great crab brought the cross back to the saint.
Johannesberg and Johannesberg Chapel
The Odinstein, today's Johannesberg, is an ancient cult soil. Because of its dense yew population, which is unique for this region, the Johannesberg is also a natural monument. The way around the Johannesberg is still referred to by the population as the Odinsweg.
The time when the Johannesberg chapel was built is uncertain; it was first mentioned in documents in 1356. Later there are entries in Jesuit chronicles about an extension of the chapel.
The chapel has been dedicated to St. John the Baptist since the 16th century. Your cartilage altar is adorned with a remarkable painting by a Dutch mannerist .
Calvary
After four devotional chapels, you can reach the main chapel on the centrally located Kalvarienberg via many stone steps laid in 1739. In this Calvary Chapel, which was completed in 1699 and is therefore the oldest in the Salzkammergut, there is a Baroque crucifixion group and old murals. When looking at these paintings, the curious depiction of the Heavenly Jerusalem, placed in the landscape of the Salzkammergut, is striking. The traditional custom of the Antlaßsingen in the night from Maundy Thursday to Good Friday finds its worthy end with the morning procession on the Calvary.
Villa Pantschoulidzeff
The popularly known "Russian villa" was built between 1850 and 1854 according to plans by the famous architect Theophil von Hansen and was probably named because Sophie Pantschoulidzeff, the client, was a Russian princess. The villa accommodated numerous famous guests, including Archduke Maximilian (brother of Emperor Franz Josef and later Emperor of Mexico ), the Russian conductor Anton Rubinstein , Rainer Maria Rilke , Wilhelm Kienzl and Adalbert Stifter . The house is owned by the antique dealer Jürgen Hesz, who is also the owner of Schloss Eggendorf .
Pointed Villa
Karl Rudolf von Slatin was an Austrian officer and enjoyed the trust of the British Queen Victoria all his life. He was Governor General of the Sudan in the British service and was nicknamed Slatin Pasha . In the "Spitzvilla", which he acquired in 1897, Slatin received various important personalities of his era, including the British King Edward VII, Emperor Franz Josef, ...
Since 1976, the "Spitzvilla" has been owned by the Province of Upper Austria. In addition to a public park, it also offers a café-restaurant. In summer it is also used as an exhibition and event center.
Handicraft Museum
In the historic rooms of the former nunnery, which became the property of the Traunkirchen municipality, the gold bonnet and headscarf groups of the Gmunden district opened their handicraft museum after years of collecting. The many facets of the lovingly designed exhibition range from typical regional handicrafts to the festive and salon costumes of this area. 34 different handicraft techniques are shown.
Regular events
- Glöcklerlauf
On the evening of January 5th, the tradition-conscious male population of Traunkirchen meets annually for the Glöcklerlauf. Various, mostly age-related, “passes” run in a star shape with brightly colored bell caps illuminated from the inside to the general meeting point, where old Christmas and nativity songs are sung at 10 p.m.
- Antlasssingen
Traunkirchen celebrates Holy Week. At 9 p.m. on Maundy Thursday, a large number of believers march through the town to “Antlasssingen”. Antlass is fear, the fear of death of Christ. In twelve different places the population is exhorted to remember the passion of Christ and to forsake sin. A cantor sings the hour, the believers join in, commemorating the stations of Jesus' suffering. After returning from the last round at 3:00 am, the "24 hours", the course of the Passion of Christ, is sung in a 16-verse, ballad-like song.
- Corpus Christi procession on the Traunsee
In Traunkirchen, Corpus Christi has been held as a eucharistic maritime procession since the second fire in 1632 . After the Holy Mass in the parish church, the procession leaves the church to the sounds of melodies from the Jesuit times and moves to the sea gate of the former monastery. Under a yellow, red embroidered canopy, the " heaven " carried by four men, the priest walks with the holy of holies . The sky is followed by guild or brotherhood flags and boys and girls, with flags in the colors of the church (yellow-white) and Upper Austria (white-red).
The bells herald the start of the procession and the local music plays the Eucharistic hymn Pange lingua .
The course of the Corpus Christi fleet, consisting of the main ship, the “Himmelsfuhre”, the counter-guide, and numerous boats, then goes to the four stations of the procession in the Winkelbucht, at the height of the monastery, south of the Johannesberg and at the war memorial with singing and prayer . At each station the priest preaches the gospel and gives the blessing .
The first oil painting of a Corpus Christi procession dates from 1830. The original is in the Maritime Museum in Greinburg .
