The occurrence of these rock carvings was discovered in 1943, graphically recorded in 1948 and described in 1950 in the Upper Austrian Homeland Gazette ( online (PDF) in the OoeGeschichte.at forum). Since then, the signs on rock 1 in particular have been badly weathered and can only be seen with difficulty. As the “power of command” of his kk apost. Majesty Emperor Franz Joseph I had the lion monument built "on the steep seashore" of the Traunsee. The lion was destroyed by a bomb attack by Italian extremists on September 23, 1963 as a result of the South Tyrol conflict and rebuilt a year later.
The approximately two and a half meter high monument was probably created in 1861 by Ferdinand Scheck the Younger based on a design by a Traunkirchen teacher. The lion sits on a large granite pedestal and holds a coat of arms with the imperial eagle in his left paw. On the street side there is a metal plaque with the following inscription: “Das Machtgeboth / Sr. kk apost. Majesty / EMPEROR FRANZ JOSEF I. / Lane on the steep Seegestade / The flat rock road / To promote traffic. / She founds rock solid / The wanderer's path / Thanks to the people. / Opened in MDCCCLXI “. The lion was listed as a historical monument in 2010 and has been thoroughly restored.
