Joseph Freiherr von Maroicic di Madonna del Monte , Croatian Maroičić , (born April 6, 1812 in Oberswidnik , ( Upper Hungary ); † October 17, 1882 Döbling , today Vienna ) was a nobleman of Croatian origin, Austro-Hungarian Privy Councilor , officer ( Feldzeugmeister ) and Commanding general and owner of the kuk Carinthian infantry regiment "Graf von Khevenhüller" No. 7 .

The son of the kk major Georg von Maroicic († 1835), who was ennobled on January 15, 1830 because of his services, attended a cadet school from October 21, 1825, became a cadet sergeant in 1828 and ensign in infantry regiment No. 60 in 1830. On April 21 In 1831 he was a lieutenant and adjutant of a battalion and, from 1834, also served on the staff of the Quartermaster General. Promoted to first lieutenant (December 1, 1834) because of his excellent performance , he became a member of the staff of the Quartermaster General on July 17, 1835 and a captain on September 29, 1843 .

Maroicic took part in several battles as a general staff officer of a division during the war in Italy in 1848 and was transferred to the general staff of the 3rd Army Corps on May 12, 1848. He distinguished himself there on May 30, 1848, during the conquest of Vicenza, in particular when taking the strategically important hill in front of the city, on which the Basilica Santuario della Madonna di Monte Berico stands, as an adviser in a brigade. In November 1849 he was promoted to major and commander of the General Staff of the 3rd Army Corps, was in the meantime decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Maria Theresa on July 29, 1849 and shortly afterwards (diploma in Vienna, November 19, 1850) was given the status of baron with the predicate di Madonna del Monte.

Later he moved with his superior to the 4th Army Corps as its chief of staff. After the fighting in Italy, the baron was employed as chief of staff of the 1st Army Corps in Transylvania against the Hungarian revolutionaries in 1849 , and at the end of July he was reinstated as lieutenant colonel in the staff of the quartermaster general.

With his appointment as colonel on November 8, 1849, Maroicic became regimental commander of the Ogulin border regiment No. 3 and on May 17, 1854 was promoted to major general and brigadier in the 6th Army Corps in Hungary . He took part in the occupation of Jassy (Iași) and Galați in the Principality of Moldova and from January 1856 he was brigade commander in Kosice . The officer was also a participant in the Sardinian War of 1859, where he contributed with his brigade to the relief of Trieste and Fiume (Rijeka) , in order to be used afterwards to support the army in the Po Delta . After an interlude as a brigadier in Komorn , he became division commander there in February 1860, shortly afterwards, on December 30, 1860, field marshal lieutenant and general staff officer in the 3rd Army Corps, then on March 6, 1861 again division commander, finally on November 20, 1862 holder of the 7th Line Infantry Regiments.

During the war against Prussia on May 11, 1866, he became the commanding general of the 7th Army Corps of the Southern Army against Italy. In the battle of Custozza on June 24, 1866, the 7th Corps under his command with 25,000 men took up position behind the center as an army reserve at Sona and Casazze, in order to attack later. During the battle, the corps advanced in the middle over Monte Belvedere, pushed the enemy troops under General Brignone (3rd Division) out of Custozza and threw them back to Valeggio. After the defeat of the Northern Army and the subsequent retreat in Italy, he held the isonzo line . For these achievements he was awarded the title of a Privy Council on July 26, 1866, and a month later the Commander's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order.

After the war, Maroicic was assigned to the general command in Ofen , appointed commander of the training camp at Bruck an der Leitha in June 1867 , then appointed commanding general in Graz and on April 22, 1868 Feldzeugmeister. On March 27, 1869, the officer was appointed commanding general in Vienna, an office he held until his retirement. Maroicic retired on May 1, 1881. Previously, on April 6, 1881, he had been honored for his excellent life's work as an officer with a handwriting from Emperor Franz Joseph I and the decoration with the Grand Cross of the Austrian Order of Leopold.

In 1882 he died in a villa in Oberdöbling where he is because of an asthmatic withdrew suffering in a rupture of the aorta . The body was consecrated in the Votive Church in Vienna and then buried in the family crypt in the Vienna Central Cemetery.
