history

Donor picture in the Traunkirchen monastery library

The monastery was founded before 900, probably between 748 and 777 by unknown donors. According to a foundation picture made in 1532 or 1598 - in the Traunkirchen monastery - it is said to have been built as early as 632 AD. The reason for the foundation is thanks for a victory over the Gentiles during the missionary work.

The monastery was first mentioned in a document on February 19, 909. In that year, the Trûnseo abbey ( abbaciam iuris nostri Trunseo dictam ) was awarded to the Margrave of the Eastern March Aribo and the Salzburg Archbishop Pilgrim I for life by King Ludwig the child .

The reason for the early demise of the monastery remains unknown. Destruction by the Hungarian invasions around 950 is obvious, but there is no concrete news. The Traunsee Abbey must have been remembered when the Traunkirchen Monastery was founded in 1020, as references to its property can be documented.

The location of the Traunsee or Trunseo Abbey is partly based on archaeological findings at the location of the Altmünster parish church , and on the other hand the name Altmünster also points to an early monastery church (such as Kremsmünster , Müstair , Altomünster etc.), as Munster names come from the Hungarian invasions were no longer formed.
