The list of monasteries in Austria lists monasteries , abbeys and monasteries in Austria and South Tyrol in chronological order by year of foundation . The specified year of foundation as well as the founders or benefactors are uncertain for many institutions. Before the year 1200, many monasteries were first collegiate monasteries , in some monasteries religious and secular priests lived side by side at times.
