The Franciscan monastery of San Candido is located in the market town of San Candido in the Puster Valley ( South Tyrol ).

history

In 1690 the Tyrolean Franciscan Province asked Emperor Leopold I to build a Franciscan monastery in Innichen. Although the emperor approved the establishment, massive resistance from the clergy and other religious orders soon arose against the project. Nevertheless, the first Friars Minor came to Innichen in 1691 and were given temporary accommodation in the “nursing home”. The bailiff Michael Dinzl of Angerburg gave the Franciscans a plot and also took over the bulk of the cost of building the monastery, which was built from 1693 to 1694. As a result, the construction of the associated church began, which was built in 1697 under the patronage of St.Leopold could be consecrated .

In the 18th and 19th centuries the Franciscans devoted themselves to pastoral care in Innichen and in the parishes of the Alta Pusteria . From 1693 to 1963 they worked as preachers at the Sunday parish service in Innichen. From 1708 to 1781 the novitiate of the Tyrolean Franciscan Province was housed in the monastery . From 1775 to 1894 Franciscans also taught as teachers at the normal school in Innichen.

In 1945 the monastery and the church burned down from a bomb hit. After the Second World War , both buildings were rebuilt and many works of art were renovated. 2003 began with the renovation of the monastery. The Franciscans' premises were moved to the top floor to make room for the new Innichner Stiftsmuseum and Stiftsarchiv.

The monastery is currently (2015) not occupied.
