life and work

Guardian angel in the parish church of St. Andrä, Lienz (around 1760)

Johann Paterer received his training from the master sculptor Mathias Schranzhofer in Innichen . He then spent years of traveling and apprenticeship in Venice and Trento , two centers of baroque sculpture. In Venice he was  influenced by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini's sphere of activity , in Castione near Trento he worked in the sculpture workshop of Cristoforo Benedetti . In 1738 he returned to Lienz, where he was granted citizenship, married and quickly received numerous commissions, among other things due to his training in Italy.

Paterer is considered to be one of the most important late Baroque sculptors in south-eastern Tyrol, he created religious sculptures for churches throughout East Tyrol, but also in South Tyrol and Carinthia, around 270 figures are known. From around 1760, his sculptures show classicist tendencies. He is particularly known for his guardian angel processional figures, which he created for several churches according to a similar scheme. A child standing on a globe is protected by an angel who seems to hover over him. The eye-catching design is achieved through a solid wooden board on which the figures are mounted and metal rods that run invisibly through the entire sculpture from the globe to the figure of the child and into the arm of the angel. These figures, which were carried during the processions on the Guardian Angel Festival (October 2), were often imitated.
