The Aggsbach Charterhouse is a former Carthusian monastery (OCart) in Aggsbach Dorf in Lower Austria .

history

Parish church of Aggsbach-Dorf , former monastery church

The monastery was founded in 1380 by Heidenreich von Maissau . From 1387 to 1391 Michael of Prague was Prior of Aggsbach.

Until the 18th century, the monastery was owned by several lordships in Lower Austria (including Purgstall , Seiterndorf , Großmugl , Külb , Kühbach and Strohdorf ) - in 1723 there were a total of twelve.

In 1782 the monastery was closed by Emperor Joseph II and converted into a castle. Parts of the monastery were transferred to the rectory, and the Carthusian cells and the large cloister were demolished. The Carthusian Church received a steeple attached to the sanctuary and became a parish church. Investigations by the Federal Monuments Office as part of the excavations in the former cell wing of the Carthusian monastery in 2010 suggest that the building material for the church tower came from the demolished cells.

Today there is a Carthusian Museum, the parish church and the event center. The former Carthusian cell tract was redesigned in a meditation garden after research by the Federal Monuments Office based on plans by the landscape architect Alfred Benesch .
