history

On September 22nd, 1827 the first Redemptorists from Vienna came to Innsbruck and took over pastoral care at the hospital church . They initially lived in the Palais Sarnthein at the end of Maria-Theresien-Straße and in 1831 they moved into the Tschurtschenthaler- or Attlmayr'sche Haus am Innrain . From 1834 they also looked after the local chaplaincy  at the Johanneskirche . In 1839 the Innsbruck Redemptorists celebrated the canonization of their founder Alphons von Liguori with an eight-day festival with processions, sermons and devotions. The congregation was abolished in 1848 and reinstated in 1853 by Emperor Franz Joseph I.

In 1895 a construction association was founded for a new monastery near the new hospital  . The First Celebration could already be celebrated on November 2, 1895 . In May 1896 the foundation stone was laid for the church, which was consecrated in 1898. During the First World War , part of the monastery served as a hospital and convalescent home for soldiers. Under the National Socialist rule, the fathers were expelled in 1941, the monastery was confiscated and used as a home for nurses. In 1945 the Redemptorists got the badly damaged building back and restored it in the following years. There has been a Konvikt in the monastery since 1960 , and since 1968 theologians from the Austrian Redemptorist Province who study at the University of Innsbruck have lived there.

In 2018 the Redemptorists decided to withdraw from Innsbruck due to the declining membership. The Sacred Heart Church is handed over to the Serbian Orthodox community, the majority of the monastery rooms will be taken over by the Styrian Admont Abbey , the remaining part will be kept by the Redemptoristers and used to accommodate students.

The neo-Romanesque monastery building, built from 1895 to 1898 according to plans by Peter Huter under the construction management of Alfons and Franz Mayr, connects to the west of the Sacred Heart Church. The two-wing corner building with a flattened corner encloses an inner courtyard with the church. The facade is structured by cornices and blind arches, the arched windows and doors are accentuated by square frames in a lighter shade. The newly built house chapel is located on the third floor, which was extended in 1985.
