The building goes back to the "Harnaschhaus", first mentioned in 1465, which was raised and expanded in the 16th century. From 1769–1773 it was expanded and rebuilt again to accommodate the noble women's monastery founded by Maria Theresia in 1765. The rooms on the ground floor were redesigned in 1929–1930 according to plans by Clemens Holzmeister , and the south wing was rebuilt in 1948 after being damaged by bombs. The complex consists of a longitudinal wing with the front facing the moat and the rear facing Stiftgasse and a transverse wing that surrounds an inner courtyard and connects to the Hofburg and the Hofkirche . The facades to the moat are designed as representative Baroque facades based on the Hofburg and have two portals flanked by pillars and wicker balconies with wrought iron tendrils. In the north wing, the late Gothic wall has largely been preserved. The inner courtyard was decorated in 1579 by Melchior Ritterl and Hans Maisfelder with architectural painting and window frames in the style of the late Renaissance . On the ground floor, which was converted into the Stiftskeller restaurant in 1930, there are remains of an architectural painting of the Harnaschhaus from 1505.

On the facade facing Hofgasse there are two oriels as well as a fresco of Maria with child and underneath of the court dwarf Thomele, who is said to have been the owner of the house in the 17th century. The arched portal on Stiftgasse has a stucco frame from the 17th century and above it a cartouche of the client's coat of arms for the baroque renovation. Inside there is a cross-vaulted hallway that leads to a two-armed staircase from around 1680. The flights of stairs are barrel vaulted, the platforms with delicate cross vaults.
