Franz Santifaller

Franz Santifaller (born December 14, 1894 in Meran , † January 12, 1953 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Family and life

The family name Santifaller is derived from the farm Santuel in the Val Gardena mountains and appears in the church registers of Brixen as early as 1412 .

The father came from Val Gardena , the mother, a nee Langes , belonged to a sizable farming family from Tesimo above Meran. After elementary school, Santifaller, following his will, went to the kk sculpture school in Laas , where the large marble quarries are located. After completing this apprenticeship, he attended the trade school in Bolzano. In 1914 he had to join the Kaiserschützen and came to the Russian front. In 1916 he came to Vienna , disabled , where he studied with Anton Hanak for a year (1918/19) . In 1920, a scholarship enabled him to study in depth in Rome and at the Art Academy in Paris , where he was influenced by Antoine Bourdelle and Charles Despiau . Since 1920 Santifaller had his permanent seat in Innsbruck and worked as a freelance artist in his studio in Mariahilf No. 7. In 1948 he was appointed head of a master school at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The artist died in Innsbruck after severe suffering.
