Walter Honeder (born October 6, 1906 in Hadersdorf-Weidlingau , † January 4, 2006 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

Life

Walter Honeder was born as the son of the painter Karl Honeder in 1906 in Hadersdorf-Weidlingau (Lower Austria, now Vienna) and has lived in Tyrol since he was ten . He studied from 1923 to 1930 at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Eugen Steinhof and Bertold Löffler . From 1931 he worked as a freelance artist in Innsbruck, in 1936 he stayed in Rome . The experiences of the Second World War and the American prisoner of war led to a turning point in his life and work. After the war, the encounter with French modernism, mediated by the French Cultural Institute in Innsbruck, had a lasting impact.

Honeder worked as a graphic artist and painter of landscapes and portraits. He created numerous murals, sgraffiti and mosaics , especially on public buildings as part of the state of Tyrol's art-in-building campaign in the post-war period. In his works, Honeder combined aspects of Viennese Expressionism and influences from French Fauvism with elements of Tyrolean folk art. The mural at the entrance to the kindergarten in Kolsass, created in 1957 and listed as a historical monument , with scenes from the town and its surroundings is considered one of the largest and most beautiful art-in-building objects of the post-war years in Tyrol.
