history
The monastery of the Sisters of Mercy was founded in 1836, and in 1837/38 the first monastery was built west of the hospital church. In 1848 the sisters bought a building in Saggen, which was largely undeveloped at the time, which served as a supply house for retired sisters and was expanded in 1855 to include a chapel dedicated to the painful Mother of God. In 1862 the entire monastery was moved to the area on the Mühlauer Brücke . In 1881 the foundation stone was laid for the new monastery church, which was built according to the plans of the architect Franz Mayr as a replica of the Basilica Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The construction was completed in 1883 and was consecrated by Prince-Bishop Simon Aichner on November 9, 1884 .
architecture
The church is located in the middle of the monastery complex, integrated into the cloister of the convent building and oriented to the southeast. The three-aisled basilica with a heavily raised central nave has coupled round arched windows in a pointed arch frame. The choir with a three-sided end is surrounded by a ground-level sacristy extension with a pent roof. The neo-Romanesque facade has a portal with a stone frame and a gable cornice with a double-arched open gable turret . Only the central nave is visible from the facade, in front of the side aisles there are staircases that connect the monastery with the gallery. The cloister is decorated with pictures of the Stations of the Cross and a painted frieze decoration. To the side of the church front there is an arcade with carved groups of figures of the Resurrection and the Mount of Olives.
Interior
The interior of the six- arched basilica with a change of columns and a gallery above the entrance is closed in the southeast with three semicircular apses, the middle of which is extended by a choir yoke. The central nave is provided with a flat coffered ceiling, the rectangular image fields show the root of Jesse based on the example of St. Michael in Hildesheim. The decorative painting of the gallery ceiling represents St. Cäcilia with angels making music and shows echoes of Art Nouveau . The side aisles have beamed ceilings, the choir bay a cross vault . The rich interior was designed by the Bolzano sculptor Josef Schmid. The choir, triumphal arch, nave walls, organ loft and vestibule are decorated with figurative representations and stencil paintings by August Mayr the Elder. The main apse is designed with a mosaic, it shows the twelve apostles under pillared canopies, above the Mother of God with angels against a golden background. The domes of the side apses are also decorated with mosaics. The carved crucifix on the high altar was created by Josef Staud in 1963 .
