Ernst Nepo

Ernst Nepo (actually Ernst Nepomucky ; born October 17, 1895 in Dauba , † August 26, 1971 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian painter . He is considered the most important representative of the New Objectivity in Tyrol .

After attending the arts and crafts school in Teplitz from 1909 to 1913, Nepo studied at the Vienna arts and crafts school with Alfred Roller , Adolf Böhm and Oskar Strnad, among others . During World War I he did military service with the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger in Galicia and on the southern front.

From 1918 he lived in Mühlau (since 1938 a district of Innsbruck), where he quickly integrated himself into Innsbruck's cultural life and formed the “Mühlauer Kreis” with Rudolf Lehnert , Herbert Gurschner and Alphons Schnegg . In 1925 he founded the artist group “Die Waage” with Wilhelm Nicolaus Prachensky , Leo Sebastian Humer , Hans Andre , Franz Santifaller and others. In 1927 he was accepted into the Vienna Secession  . From 1933 to 1937 Nepo worked as a set designer at the city ​​theater , at the Exl stage in Innsbruck and for the Passion Play in Thiersee .

Nepo became an illegal member of the NSDAP as early as the mid-1930s . In 1938/39 and 1941/43 he was regional director of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts in Tyrol before handing this position over to Max von Esterle . From 1939 to 1944 he served in the war. After 1945 he received numerous public commissions for monumental wall paintings and portraits. In the 1950s he stayed frequently in South Tyrol and lived in Tscherms in 1951/53 ; He was unable to continue his artistic activity since 1960 for health reasons.

Initially influenced by Giovanni Segantini and Egon Schiele and committed to Expressionism , Nepo increasingly turned to New Objectivity from the mid-1920s. Although he did not stay with it for long, he is today counted among the most important representatives of the New Objectivity in Tyrol. He was best known for his portraits.
