Max von Esterle
Max von Esterle (born June 16, 1870 in Cortina d'Ampezzo , Austria-Hungary ; died January 4, 1947 in Bezau in Vorarlberg ) was an Austrian painter and portraitist .
Life
Max von Esterle attended the private painting school Heinrich Strehblow in Vienna and from 1897 to 1900 the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied from 1900 to 1904 at the Munich Art Academy . From 1909 to 1910 he worked for the magazine Der Föhn , then until 1913 as a caricaturist for Ludwig von Ficker's magazine Der Brenner . In 1914 he had to take part in the First World War as a soldier and was taken prisoner by Russia, from which he was only released in 1920. From 1919 he was called Max Esterle. From 1924 he worked as a lecturer for drawing and painting technology at the University of Innsbruck . In 1926 he became the first president of the professional association of fine artists in Tyrol. After Austria's annexation in 1938, Esterle became a member of the NSDAP and headed the Tyrolean Chamber of Fine Arts from 1939 to 1941.

Esterle mainly made portraits and paintings of southern landscapes and preferred open-air painting. He also worked in woodcut and etching.
