Markwart IV.

Markwart IV of Eppenstein (* 1010/20 ; † 1076 ) was Count in Viehbachgau, 1039 Count in Carinthia , 1070 Margrave of Istria-Carniola and (questionable :) Duke of Carinthia from 1073 to 1076.

Life

He was the eldest son of Duke Adalbero of Carinthia († 1039) from the house of the Eppensteiners and Beatrix of Swabia , daughter of Duke Hermann II.

In 1039 , after the death of Emperor Konrad II , the Eppensteiners received from King Heinrich III. all 1035 confiscated property returned and Markwart IV as count in Carinthia was the actual Carinthian ruler. Approx. In 1065 he founded the Treffen castle about 10 km north of Villach. He became Margrave of Istria - Carniola in 1070 , moved against Hungary with King Heinrich IV in 1072 and became Duke of Carinthia at the end of 1072 after the Zähringen Duke Berthold was deposed . In 1074 he became Vogt of Aquileia , in between he was also Vogt of Brixen (1067). He founded the St. Lambrecht Abbey , took over its bailiwick and died in 1076.

Markwart and his wife Liutbirg are buried in the church of St. Martin im Greut (Greith), east of Neumarkt, according to a tradition that still exists in the St. Lambrecht Abbey. Liutbirg would have founded a convent there.

Marriage and offspring

From 1045/50 Markwart was married to Liutbirg, daughter of Count Liutold II. Von Plain, † before 1103. The marriage grew out of:

  • Henry III. (* around 1050 - † December 4, 1122)
  • Markwart († before June 16, 1076)
  • Ulrich († December 21, 1121), Abbot of St. Gallen (1077), also Patriarch of Aquileia (1085)
  • Hermann (* around 1055; † 1087), (counter) bishop of Passau (1085-1087)
