Hermann von Eppenstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann von Eppenstein (* unknown; † 1087 ) was a Passau counter-bishop from 1085 to 1087 .

Hermann von Eppenstein, son of Duke Markward of Carinthia , came from an influential family. His first two brothers were Dukes of Carinthia, the third was Abbot of St. Gallen and later even Patriarch of Aquileja.

In April 1085 the bishops who remained loyal to Emperor Heinrich IV appointed him counter-bishop at the Mainz Synod and declared Altmann , who was loyal to the Pope , the actual bishop of Passau, to be deposed. Altmann had to flee from Passau , where Hermann was welcomed by his supporters.

In 1086, a year later, Hermann was banned from church by Archbishop Gebhard von Salzburg , Bishop Altmann von Passau and Bishop Meginward von Freising.

On his deathbed, Hermann allegedly repented in 1087 and asked for the excommunication from the church because he regretted Altmann's ousting. According to this, he is said to have returned the episcopal insignia to him. His followers believed they recognized feverish fantasies in this behavior.

As an opposing bishop, he is not listed as a former bishop by the Diocese of Passau today.
