Richard of Passau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard (*?; † 902 ) was the 13th Bishop of Passau from 899 to 902 .

Richard was perhaps King Arnulf's custodian and abbot of the royal monastery of Metten .

Another attempt by Rome to restore an independent Moravian church over the heads of the Bavarian bishops caused Richard to start negotiations with Rome on behalf of his Bavarian counterparts.

As a result, the Moravian-Slavic threat was replaced by the Hungarian threat, not only for the diocese of Passau, but for the whole of Bavaria. In the year 900 eastern Bavaria experienced a devastating incursion by the Hungarians over the Enns. Richard tried, together with Margrave Luitpold, to counter the danger to Hungary by building the Ennsburg near Linz. Richard's death on September 16, 902 saved the bishop from the coming terrible visitation of the diocese.
