Franz-Reiner Erkens

Franz-Reiner Erkens (born November 21, 1952 in Cologne ) is a German historian of medieval history.

Franz-Reiner Erkens studied history and German at the University of Cologne from 1971 to 1976 . With Egon Boshof , Erkens received his doctorate in 1980 at the University of Passau with a thesis on the Archbishop of Cologne Siegfried von Westerburg . In 1985 he completed his habilitation in Passau with a paper on the Trier church province in the investiture dispute . From 1985 to 1992 he taught as a private lecturer in medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Passau. From 1992 to 1993 he was a lecturer in medieval history at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .

In 1993 he was appointed to the chair for medieval history at the University of Leipzig . From 1993 to 1996 he was Dean of the Faculty of History, Art and Oriental Studies in Leipzig. In 2002, Erkens was appointed to the chair for Medieval History at the University of Passau as the successor to Egon Boshof. In 2008 he also succeeded Boshof as head of the Institute for East Bavarian Local History Research , which was soon converted into the Institute for Cultural Research in East Bavaria and the Neighboring Regions (IKON). Erkens is a member of the Association for Historical Regional Studies of the Rhineland (since 1975), a member of the Association for East Bavarian Local History Research (since 1979) and a full member of the Commission for Bavarian Regional History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich (since 2011). He retired on October 1, 2018.
