Hartmut Wolff

Hartmut Wolff (born November 6, 1941 in Oldenburg ; † February 4, 2012 ) was a German ancient historian .

Wolff studied history, classical philology and archeology in Erlangen , Freiburg and Cologne . He received his doctorate in 1972 from Friedrich Vittinghoff in Cologne with a thesis on the Constitutio Antoniniana . In 1977 he completed his habilitation in Cologne. From 1978 he worked there as a scientific adviser and professor. In 1980 he was appointed to the chair for Ancient History at the University of Passau , which he held until his retirement in 2007.

Wolff dealt primarily with the history of the Roman provinces, the administrative history of the Roman Empire and with Roman military diplomas . He was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . In 1997 he was awarded the knighthood of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
