Engelmar of Passau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engelmar , also: Egilmar, was the 9th Bishop of Passau from 875 to 899 .

No informative data are known about the exact origin, descent or other important dates in the life of Bishop Engelmar. Various information is also available for his reign.

In any case, on January 7, 886, Bishop Engelmar asked Emperor Karl III. for protection and immunity for the Passau Church. Apart from that, Engelmar was granted freedom from services to the king and duty-free for Passau.

In December 898, Emperor Arnulf gave him a plot of land in the city east of the cathedral . In the period between the years 887 and 899, the emperor allegedly transferred the Kremsmünster monastery to him . Engelmar was probably also involved in the disputes between Moravia and Rome over the Christianization of Moravia, including its special point of contention, the introduction of the Slavic liturgy.
