Ramón José Velásquez Mújica (born November 28, 1916 in San Juan de Colón , † June 24, 2014 in Caracas ) was a Venezuelan politician ( Acción Democrática ), lawyer and historian . He was President of Venezuela from June 5, 1993 to February 2, 1994.

Live and act

Velásquez studied at the Universidad Central de Venezuela , where he earned a degree in political and social sciences in 1942 and a law degree in 1943. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he worked for the newspaper Últimas Noticias . After spending several years in political captivity during the dictatorship under Marcos Pérez Jiménez , he was elected to the Venezuelan parliament in 1958 on the list of the Acción Democrática party. He was appointed Secretary General under the government of Rómulo Betancourt . After Carlos Andrés Pérez had resigned from the office of president, the congress elected Vélazquez on June 5, 1993 against the wishes of the congress chairman Octavio Lepage as interim president. His brief tenure was marked by the bankruptcy of Banco Latino and massive capital flight abroad. Both, however, are mainly attributed to the failed policy of its predecessors. His most important action as president was the introduction of sales tax .
