Germán Suárez Flamerich (born April 10, 1907 in Caracas ; † June 24, 1990 ibid) was a Venezuelan lawyer, university professor, diplomat and from 1950 to 1952 President of Venezuela .

Early years and career

His parents were JM Suárez and Florinda Flamerich. He studied law at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) in Caracas and took part in a failed student uprising (the " Generación de 28 " (generation of 28)) in February 1928 . Because of this, he was arrested in April (and from October to December 1929).

In 1931 he graduated both as a lawyer and in social and political sciences. He initially worked as a lawyer and from 1936 as a professor at the UCV, where he also became dean of the Faculty of Law in 1945.

As legal advisor to the military government of Carlos Delgado Chalbaud , he became Foreign Minister in 1949 and Ambassador to Peru in 1950 . In the wake of Carlos Delgado's assassination, he was appointed president on November 27, 1950.

Presidency

Because of the marital status of Germán Suárez, the " military " was renamed the "government junta", but he was viewed in public only as an instrument of the other two members (Defense Minister Marcos Pérez Jiménez and Luis Felipe Llovera Páez ).

In the following years, this junta pursued strong repression of politically opposition institutes and individuals (such as the strike in the oil industry in 1950 or the closing of the UCV; the Guasina internment camp on an island in the Orinoco was also reopened), and elections were held on the other prepared and measures taken to promote the economy (such as the creation of a ministry for mines and hydrocarbons, an iron and steel industry or the expansion of the road network).

Although the elections, which took place on November 30, 1952, were viewed by the Acción Democrática as a farce and therefore boycotted, the (non-government controlled) Unión Republicana Democrática (URD) won. The junta then did not recognize the elections and launched a coup on December 2, 1952, with many members of the URD either arrested or expelled from the country. Marcos Pérez Jiménez was installed as interim president and finally confirmed on January 9, 1953 by Congress.

Last years

After his impeachment, Germán Flamerich went into exile in Europe until 1954. He then returned to Caracas, where he worked as a lawyer.
