Kim Christian Beazley (born December 14, 1948 in Perth , Western Australia ) is an Australian politician with the Australian Labor Party .

Beazley was a member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1980 to 2007 . As a cabinet minister, he was a member of the governments of Labor Prime Ministers Bob Hawke (1983-1991) and Paul Keating (1991-1996). Between 1983 and 1996 Beazley was Minister of Aviation (1983), Secretary of Defense (1984–90), Minister of Transport (1990–91), Minister of Finance (1991, 1993–96), Minister of Education (1991–93) and Deputy Prime Minister of Australia (1995–96).

From 1996 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2006 Beazley was also chairman of the Labor Party and at the same time opposition leader in the Australian lower house.

After the loss of the vote for the leadership of the ALP against the former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in December 2006, Beazley announced that he would no longer run for the upcoming federal elections in 2007 and would withdraw from politics. He then took up a professorship in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Western Australia . In July 2008 he was appointed Chancellor of the Australian National University , which he remained until December 2009. Beazley became Australian Ambassador to the United States in February of the following year, replacing Dennis Richardson . In January 2016 he was replaced by Joe Hockey .

Kim Beazley is married with two children.
