John Douglas Anthony

John Douglas "Doug" Anthony AC , CH , PC (born December 31, 1929 in Murwillumbah , New South Wales , † December 20, 2020 ) was an Australian politician .

Life

Anthony began his political career when he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1957 , where he represented the interests of the Country Party, now the National Party of Australia , until 1983 .

In 1964, Prime Minister Robert Menzies appointed him to a government for the first time as Minister of the Interior. He held this office under Menzie's successor Harold Holt from 1966 to 1967. In the governments of Prime Ministers John McEwen and John Gorton he was then Minister for Primary Industry . In March 1971, Prime Minister William McMahon appointed him Minister of Commerce and Industry. In his government, which was in office until December 1972, he was also Deputy Prime Minister.

On February 5, 1971, he was elected to succeed John McEwen as chairman of the Country Party.

After forming a coalition government with the Liberal Party of Australia , he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser on November 11, 1975. He held this office until the end of Fraser's reign on March 11, 1983, during which time he was Prime Minister of Australia about 25 times for a few days to several weeks during the Prime Minister's absence. In the Fraser government, he was also Minister for Overseas Trade and National Resources from 1975 to 1977 and, after a cabinet reshuffle, Minister for Trade and Resources from 1977 to 1983. In 1981 Anthony was named Companion of Honor (CH).

After leaving the House of Representatives, he resigned as chairman of the National Party in 1984 and was replaced in this position by Ian Sinclair .
