Anthony Norman Albanese (born March 2, 1963 in Sydney , New South Wales ) is an Australian politician of the Australian Labor Party and since March 1996 for the constituency of Grayndler (within Sydney, New South Wales) as a member of the Australian House of Representatives . From 2007 to 2013 he was Minister and in 2013 Deputy Prime Minister.

Life

Albanese studied economics at the University of Sydney . Before his political career he worked as a bank clerk. Between 1985 and 1989 he worked for Tom Uren , then Minister for Local Government and Administrative Services. After that, Albanese was Vice Secretary-General of the party in New South Wales until 1995. From 1995 to 1996 he was an advisor to Bob Carr , the state's prime minister .

Since 1998 he has been a member of the opposition's shadow cabinet. On December 3, 2007, he became Minister in the first government of Kevin Rudd for infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government, as well as for parliamentary affairs . In the same capacity, he also belonged to Julia Gillard's cabinet , but from September 2010 to March 2013 was only responsible for transport and infrastructure as well as parliamentary matters. On June 26, 2013, Albanese was elected Deputy Chairman of the Labor Party and one day later appointed Deputy Prime Minister under Kevin Rudd (second cabinet), while maintaining his previous government functions. After the Labor Party's third consecutive defeat in the 2019 election, Bill Shorten stepped down as its chairman. Albanese then ran unopposed and was elected chairman of the Labor Party and leader of the opposition.
