The city is located on the Tweed River in the crater of the largest extinct shield volcano in the world, Mount Warning . history

The area was initially populated by Aborigines from the Bundjalung tribe. In 1873 the name Murwillumbah was mentioned for the first time in history. Sugar cane cultivation began in the area two years later. With the connection to the rail network at Christmas 1894, Murwillumbah expanded its trade. Murwillumbah was the terminus of the railway line to Casino , where there was daily connection to Sydney via the north coast line. In 2004, this route was given up due to excessive restructuring costs.

The people there still live mainly from milk production, sugar cane and banana cultivation and tourism.
