Barker Street in Casino

Casino is a city in the extreme northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . The city on the Richmond River is approximately 14 miles west of Lismore , 726 kilometers north of Sydney and 228 kilometers south of Brisbane . Casino is the administrative center of the Local Government Area Richmond Valley Council and had a population of 9,982 at the 2016 census.

Origin of name

The city was named after the Casino Station , a sheep breeding station owned by Clarke Irving . This in turn named his property after the Italian city of Cassino . There is a community partnership between the two cities .

economy

Casino is one of the main beef production centers in Australia. The city is the center of a large cattle breeding area and calls itself the "Beef Capital of Australia", although the city of Rockhampton claims the same for itself. In addition, it is the middle center of a rich, agriculturally used area.

Casino celebrates Beef Week every year , only in 2007 it was canceled due to the drought. In 2008 Beef Week took place from May 27th to June 3rd.

traffic

Casino is at the junction of the Bruxner Highway (Australian Route 44) and Summerland Way (State Road 91).

The station is on the North Coast Line from Sydney to Brisbane, north of Grafton . A branch line ran from here via Lismore to Murwillumbah . This branch line is currently closed, but the population is demanding that it be restarted. Casino is also the end point of the daily CountryLink connection Casino XPT to and from Sydney. There is also a daily train connection to Brisbane ( Brisbane XPT ).

In the 1920s, construction began on a railway line to Bonalbo (around 45 kilometers west-northwest of Casino). But this line was never completed.

There are several daily flights to Sydney from nearby Lismore Airport .
