Echinopsis comarapana is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet comarapana refers to the occurrence of the species near Comarapa in the Bolivian province of Vallegrande .
description
Echinopsis comarapana has many shoots and forms low cushions 30 to 40 centimeters in diameter. The short cylindrical, straight or slightly curved, gray-green shoots are tapered to the depressed tip of the shoot. They are 10 to 15 centimeters high and 5 to 8 centimeters in diameter. There are ten to twelve ribs that are furrowed across. The gray areoles on them are up to 1 centimeter apart. From them arise thin, needle-like thorns that are thickened at their base. The single, downward central spine is up to 2 centimeters long. The nine to eleven gray radial spines are spread out and have a length of 0.5 to 1.1 centimeters.
The funnel-shaped, white flowers appear on the upper sides of the shoot. They are 13 to 15 centimeters and have a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The spherical, dark green fruits reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters.
Distribution and systematics
Echinopsis comarapana is distributed in the Bolivian Department of Santa Cruz in the provinces of Florida and Vallegrande in middle altitudes around 1900 meters.
The first description by Martín Cárdenas was published in 1957.
The following taxa were as synonymous included in the Type: Lobivia megacarpa F.Ritter (without year, nom inval.. ICBN -Article 29.1), Echinopsis pereziensis Cárdenas (1963) and Echinopsis ayopayana F.Ritter & Rausch (1968).
