Martín Cárdenas (botanist)

Martín Cárdenas Hermosa (born November 12, 1899 in Cochabamba , † February 14, 1973 in Cochabamba) was a Bolivian botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Cárdenas ".

After completing his basic training, he studied and graduated in 1918 with a Bachelor of Science and Letters. He then continued his studies in chemistry and natural sciences at a university in La Paz with a scholarship . During this time he came into contact with the Swedish botanist Eric Asplund and accompanied him on his travels through Bolivia.

In addition to the cactus family , he was also interested in other plant families of which species occur in Bolivia, including the amaryllis family , the iris family , the bromeliad family , the palm family and the trumpet tree family .

He wrote many specialist articles for renowned botany journals. They have appeared in Cactus and Other Succulents , Cactus & Succulent Journal of America , National Cactus and Succulent Journal (England), Succulenta , Cactus , Cactaceas y Succulentas Mexicanas, and in many other South American publications. In 1969 he wrote the Manual de plantas económicas de Bolivia .

Honors

After Martín Cárdenas are plant species named: from Henry Hurd Rusby 1927 genus Cardenasia , by Robert Crichton Foster 1945 genus Cardenanthus of the family Iridaceae (Iridaceae) by Curt cheek mountain 1949, the cactus genus Neocardenasia and Fred Alexander Barkley 1954, the genus Cardenasiodendron from the sumac family (Anacardiaceae). Numerous plant species refer to him in the specific epithet , including the three cactus species Echinopsis cardenasiana (Rausch) H.Friedrich , Gymnocalycium cardenasianum F.Ritter and Sulcorebutia cardenasiana R.Vásquez .

On 10 July 1998, he was a published in Bolivia postage stamp ( Michel number. Honored in 1370).
