Urs Eggli

Urs Eggli (born February 11, 1959 near Zurich ) is a Swiss botanist and non-fiction author . He has been working as a research assistant at the Zurich Succulents Collection , a department of Grün Stadt Zürich , since 1986 . Urs Eggli is a specialist in cacti and other succulents .

Life

Urs Eggli graduated from school in 1978 and then studied biology with a focus on systematic botany at the University of Zurich . In 1983 he finished his studies with his master 's on The stomata of the Cactaceae . From 1983 to 1987 he earned a Ph.D. at the University of Zurich under the direction of Karl Urs Kramer. The work A monographic study of the genus Rosularia (Crassulaceae) was published as a supplement to volume 6 (1988) of Bradleya , the yearbook of the British Cactus and Succulent Society. Since 1986 he has been employed as a research assistant at the Zurich Succulent Collection . He was in charge of the Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants series (published 2001–2003). Since 1984 he has been editor of the annual Repertorium Plantarum Succulentarum published by the International Organization for Succulent Research (IOS).

Urs Eggli writes and wrote numerous articles for magazines on the subject of succulents, especially on systematics and nomenclature . He is active in field research in Argentina , Brazil , Chile and Uruguay . He is particularly interested in the diversity of succulents and their evolution .

Honors

Urs Eggli was made a Fellow of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America in 2007. In 2014, the International Organization for Succulent Research (IOS) nominated him for the Cactus d'Or awarded by the Principality of Monaco , which he received at the Jardin Exotique de Monaco in early June 2015 .
