Joachim Hermisson (born December 12, 1968 in Heidelberg ) is a German mathematician . He is Professor of Mathematics and Biology at Max F. Perutz Laboratories and in the Biomathematics research group at the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna .

Hermisson studied physics and philosophy at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and the Georg-August University of Göttingen . In Göttingen graduated he in 1995 in physics and a doctorate in 1999 in Tübingen summa cum laude at Michael Baakenhafen on aperiodic order and magnetic phase transitions . From 2000 to 2002 he was a post-doctoral student at Yale University in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology ; From 2002 to 2007 as a research group leader in the Emmy Noether program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he also completed his habilitation in biology in 2006 . From 2008 to 2012 he held an endowed professorship of the Vienna Science, Research and Technology Fund (WWTF) for mathematics and biosciences at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories and the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna. In October 2012 the endowed professorship was converted into a regular professorship.

Hermisson's research work is strongly interdisciplinary . He is primarily concerned with mathematical models in evolutionary biology . His specialties are population genetics (theoretical models for speciation and adaptation ), as well as statistical genetics and DNA sequence analyzes . Hermisson is the founder of EvolVienna , a network of more than 50 research groups in the field of evolutionary research in the Vienna area.
