Guyra is a city in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . It is located in the northern plateau of New England on a volcanic uplift zone, about 45 km north of Armidale and about 75 km south of Glen Innes . At 1,330 m above sea level, it is one of the highest cities in Australia. Guyra is the administrative center of the Guyra Shire Local Government Area and had a population of 1,983 at the 2016 census.

history

The Aboriginesstamm the Anaiwan originally lived in the region around present-day Guyra. At first the place was called Hillgo'el or Illgoel . This is a word from the Yukambal language and means 'swamp' in German. The name Guyra is said to come from an Anaiwan language , which means 'white cockatoo' or 'place to fish' in German.

The first European farmers settled in the area around 1835. Alexander Campbell took over Guyra Station , which also encompassed today's urban area. The Olara Station - today the place Wandsworth - was settled in 1838 and had the first church in the Guyra administrative area from 1876. In 1840 Donald McIntyre was registered as the tenant of Gyra and in 1848 Guyra - at that time 61 km² in size - was leased to Charles William Marsh .

The Great Northern Railway Line was extended to Guyra in 1884, and Guyra was elevated to a village on March 20, 1885. The dairy industry was the most important industry in the 1890s. After that, potato cultivation became more popular. The first post office opened on May 1, 1877.

Guyra was in national focus on February 5, 1960 when a four-year-old boy named Steven Walls ran away from his father in a field north of town and disappeared for four days. Hundreds of volunteers combed the area for the boy. Eventually he was found sleeping on a tree trunk. He asked his rescuers first thing: "Where is my father, where is my father?" From the hit was later Little Boy Lost by Johnny Ashcroft . In 1978 a film was made called Little Boy Lost , in which many residents of the area acted as extras. It has been shown all over Australia. Steven Walls still lives in the area today.

economy

In Guyra there was a large slaughterhouse with up to 350 employees and workers until 1995. Today there is a breeding station for Angora rabbits in the building . The most important industries today are the production of fine sheep's wool, lamb and beef, potatoes and tomatoes. A 20 hectare greenhouse has been built in the city. 240 workers work for this company and produce 12 million kg of tomatoes a year. This makes it the largest tomato producer in Australia. In 2007, Guyra won the Northern Inland Development Innovation Award for Agriculture for its first-class tomatoes, and the Innovator of the Year Award for the development of innovations in agriculture . Prize for Inventor of the Year).

traffic

Guyra is located on the New England Highway (National Route 15), 35 miles north of Armidale and 59 miles south of Glen Innes. A connecting road from Ebor (on Waterfall Way (State Road 78)) to Inverell (on Gwydir Highway (Australian Route 38)) crosses the city in a west-east direction.

The tracks of the Great Northern Railway Line still run through Guyra. The route north of Armidale was abandoned.

Events

The most important annual festival is the Lamb and Potato Festival (German: Lamb and Potato Festival ) in January. Other events include the Guyra Show in February and the Rotary Christmas Carnival in December. The first Mountain Bike Challenge took place on March 14, 2009 . She was supposed to make donations for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter .

Sport and club life

The Guyra bowling club boasts the highest bowling area in the southern hemisphere. This is not true, however, as the club's bowling area in Johannesburg , South Africa, is a few hundred meters higher.

There are many local clubs, such as the Lions club and the Rotary club . In addition, many sports are practiced in Guyra, such as B. Australian football , polocrosse , soccer and cricket , which also have local teams. Sports venues have a bowling area, tennis courts, a cricket field, hockey fields and a shooting range.

Nature and tourism

Guyra is located on the Mother of Ducks Lagoon , the crater lake of a long-extinct volcano. The nature reserve there has national status. The golf course, picnic areas, and a hiking trail to an observation deck are all on the lakefront.

Guyra is a watershed . All rivers east of the railway line (including the Guyra River ) flow into the Pacific , while those west of it ultimately flow into the Murray River and thus into the Indian Ocean .

climate

Guyra is one of the coldest places in New South Wales because of its altitude. On average there are 59 nights of frost per year.
