Armidale was founded in 1849 and has 19,818 inhabitants. The name comes from George James Macdonald, Commissioner of the Crown Lands in the late 1830s, and is an altered spelling of Armadale on the Isle of Skye , the seat of the Macdonald clan .
The city is home to the University of New England . It also has two cathedrals, St Peter's Anglican Cathedral of the Anglican Church and The Catholic Cathedral of St Mary and St Joseph of the Roman Catholic Church. Armidale also has the highest airport in Australia. Armidale can be reached by rail on the Newcastle - Toowoomba route and the New England Highway .
