The New England Highway is a trunk road in southeast Australia . It is an important link between Sydney , the capital of New South Wales , and Brisbane , the capital of Queensland . Unlike the Pacific Highway , the New England Highway runs inland.

course

New South Wales

Today the New England Highway branches off from the Pacific Highway in Hexham , northeast of Newcastle . After just 4 km it reaches the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway (N1), which creates the connection to Sydney. From there it continues its way northwest through the Hunter Valley to Muswellbrook and then turns north. It overcomes the Great Dividing Range and reaches Tamworth in the Darling Downs , part of eponymous New England .

From Tamworth the road goes northeast, reaches the ridge of the Great Dividing Range again at Armidale and follows it north. It leads through Glen Innes and Tenterfield to the Queensland border.

The highest point on the highway is at 1430 m, the lowest at 1 m.

Queensland

The New England Highway continues north via Stanthorpe to Warwick . There it crosses the Cunningham Highway (N15 / S42), which creates the connection to Brisbane. The New England Highway continues north and crosses the Warrego Highway (NA2) in Toowoomba , which also leads to Brisbane.

After a further 118 km, the road in Yarraman reaches the D'Aguilar Highway , where it ends.

numbering

From Hexham to Warwick, the New England Highway is signposted as National Route 15 (N15). There the Cunningham Highway takes over this number. From there to the end in Yarraman, the road bears the number A3, which then takes over the D'Aguilar Highway and later the Burnett Highway in Yarraman .

Economical meaning

The New England Highway is the main road link for residents and local industries into the Hunter Valley. Due to the high volume of traffic, the highway has already been partially expanded into a multi-lane expressway and there are already specific plans for the remaining sections. Most of the rest of the road runs through rural areas and is therefore often only a two-lane road. The route between Tamworth and Stanthorpe follows the course of the Great Dividing Range at higher altitudes and in winter this section often experiences frost and sometimes heavy snowfall.
