Uralla

Uralla is a city in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . It is located in the northern plateau of New England , 465 km north of Sydney and about 23 km southwest of Armidale . It is the administrative center of the Uralla Shire Local Government Area and the 2016 census counted 2,421 residents.

The altitude of over 1,000 m above sea level ensures cold winters and mild summers.

history

The European settlers derived the name Uralla from the language of the local Aboriginal tribe, the Aniwan . He describes a "meeting place for ceremonies and a viewpoint on a hill".

All Saints Chapel in Gostwyck, east of Uralla

Samuel McCrossin, an Irishman, his wife, and seven children were the first Europeans to come to the area in 1839 and pitch their tent by a nearby stream. They returned to Morpeth (near Newcastle ) but returned in 1841 and eventually settled in Uralla. In the 1830s and 1840s, land was acquired by settlers who had moved north from the previous settlement boundary. They valued the fertile grazing land of the New England tabular country. Pasture grounds were z. B. Kentucky, Gostwyck, Balala, Yarrowyck, Mihi Creek, Terrible Vale and Salisbury Court . Some of the buildings that were built at that time, such as B. the place Balala or the wonderful Gostwyck Chapel (All Saints Chapel ) are today on the list of the Australian national heritage . Some of the land captured by the settlers was made available to smallholders after the Robertson Land Acts 1861 came into force .

Uralla was given the title of city in 1855, which was also due to the gold rush in the Rocky River area three years earlier, which let the settlement grow to over 5,000 souls. Another, even bigger, gold rush took place there in 1856, but this did not lead to any lasting growth in the city. In 1859 Uralla owned three hotels, shops, a post office, a mill and a school.

In 1882 Uralla received an official city administration. In 1948 the city became the administrative center of the Uralla Shire after it was merged with the former Gostwyck Shire .

In 1887, more gold was found and mined at Melrose, in the Enmore area . The discovery of gold led to the construction of a village and school in Melrose, about 32 km east of Uralla. In 1927 this area was parceled out and the parcels were given to former soldiers.

In 1889 gold was found at Goses Creek , 6 km southwest of Enmore near Mihi Falls , east of Uralla.

The notorious Captain Thunderbolt (real name: Frederick Ward , 1835–1870) is buried in the old Uralla cemetery on John Street. In the city there are many references to this robber chief and the inhabitants are quite proud of his legend. In addition to an initially controversial statue on the main street, Uralla has a pub, a motel, a rock (from which Ward attacked passing travelers) and streets that bear the name Thunderbolts. On May 25, 1870, Captain Thunderbolt was shot and killed by Constable Alexander Walker in the vicinity of Uralla while robbing a tour group. However, some Urallan citizens insisted that the robbers' uncle, William (Harry) Ward , disguised himself as Captain Thunderbolt this time and was shot, and not Frederic Ward himself. The legend of Captain Thunderbolt is depicted and contained in the McCrossin's Mill Museum a series of nine paintings by Phillip Pomroy depicting the events that led to Frederic Ward's death.

In 2008, according to a report by Australian Property Monitors , Uralla saw the highest property appreciation (35% in 12 months).

economy

Three foundries and other metal processing companies provide jobs in Uralla. With the city roughly halfway between Sydney and Brisbane , tourism is also an important industry. It offers a city center that is well worth seeing and twenty national parks can be reached from here in a maximum of two hours by car. Because of its proximity to the larger Armidale, there are few large chain stores in Uralla and the small shops could survive, e.g. B. a book antiquarian, various galleries, antique shops and cafes.

In the rivers around Uralla, such as B. the Rocky River, you can still panning for gold today. Merino sheep , which are particularly known for their fine wool for the clothing industry, are kept in the area today . There are also a number of wineries that specialize in grape varieties grown in cool, temperate climates. Apples and other types of fruit that require a cooler climate are also grown.

A broadband trial in the city of a converter on Mount Mutton uses, has attracted IT developers, committed to a cooperative called Granite Globe Inc. have joined forces. Lockheed Martin has set up a satellite observation station in Uralla.

Uralla also has a thriving community of artists and potters inspired by its proximity to the University of New England at Armidale.

There are also some environmental problems in the area, mainly caused by improper soil treatment. Extensive logging and intensive agricultural use of the soil led to erosion . The local administration of the area and its communities is now trying to eliminate this problem.
