Glen Innes is a town of about 5,200 inhabitants in the north of the Australian state of New South Wales . It is located 600 kilometers north of Sydney and 360 kilometers southwest of Brisbane at the junction of the New England Highway and Gwydir Highway . The city is the administrative seat of the Administrative Area (LGA) Glen Innes Severn Council .

The production of wool , as well as cattle and sheep breeding, have been the main industries in this region for 150 years. Wood production and the mining of sapphires also play a role. With the inclusion of the Gondwana rainforests in the nearby Gibraltar Range and Washpool National Park in the UNESCO - World Heritage , tourism is becoming increasingly important.

history

Around 1838, two ranchers, also known as the Beardies because of their long beards, were the first Europeans to come to the Glen Innes area. 14 years later in 1852 the city was founded, named after the Scottish settler Major Archibald Clunes Innes. The first post office was built in 1854 and the courthouse was built in 1858. In 1866, about 350 people lived in the city. It was only after tin was discovered near Emmaville in 1872 that the population increased significantly and reached 1,500 three years later.
