Mammillaria chionocephala is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet chionocephala means '(lat. Chionocephalus) snow-headed, white-headed'.

description

Mammillaria chionocephala usually grows individually. The depressed, spherical, short cylindrical, light green shoots are 15 to 20 centimeters high and 9 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The closely standing, pyramidal-shaped warts do not contain any milky juice . The axillae are covered with plenty of white wool and bristles. The 2 to 4  central spines , sometimes 6, are white with a dark tip. They are 0.6 inches long. The bristle-like white 22 to 24 radial spines are 0.8 inches long.

The white to light pink flowers are up to 1 centimeter long and large in diameter. The crimson fruits contain brown seeds .

Distribution and systematics

Mammillaria chionocephala is common in the Mexican states of Nuevo León , Coahuila , Durango , San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas .

The first description was in 1906 by Joseph Anton Purpus .

Synonyms are the following described species and varieties:
Mammillaria hahniana var. Chionocephala (JAPurpus) Kuhn (1981, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Mammillaria formosa subsp. chionocephala (JAPurpus) DRHunt (1998), Mammillaria ritteriana Boed. (1929) and Mammillaria caerulea R.T. Craig (1945).
